It is now being reported that Newcastle United have reached out to Inter Milan to discuss a deal for Federico Dimarco.

There have been a few reports linking Newcastle with an interest in Federico Dimarco of Inter Milan recently and now Football Transfers have claimed that the Magpies are set to meet with Inter representatives to discuss a potential move.

The last time we covered Dimarco it was to say that Inter had decided not to sell the 25-year-old full back this summer, but now it seems like Newcastle are poised to test their resolve with the player having recently changed agents, which usually hints at them wanting a move.

Dimarco’s attacking stats at Inter are unbelievable for a full-back

As far as attacking left-backs go there aren’t many in the world better than Dimarco. The Italian international scored four goals and provided five assists in an ‘extraordinary‘ campaign in Serie A last season. There are some wingers who don’t manage that many goal contributions, never mind defenders. We previously looked at his FBref stats and they reinforced just how good he is from an attacking standpoint.

His defensive stats don’t paint as good of a picture, so if we’re looking for Dimarco to play like Dan Burn it’s not going to work. However, Dan Burn faced a lot of criticism for his attacking play. Between the two we have all bases covered and Eddie Howe could mix and match to suit the opposition.

Newcastle are now reaching out to Inter to ask about their valuation of the player, which is a positive step, but the feeling is that Inter will go in with a high figure which could force Newcastle to walk away before even getting to the bidding stage.

Hopefully talks will progress as Dimarco is a phenomenal player and could take Newcastle to the next level. He recently played in a Champions League final, he’s won two Italian Cups and two Italian Super Cups. He’s got all the experience we need and bags of talent.

Newcastle may have to sell before funding a move for Dimarco

It’s all down to money. Newcastle’s wiggle room with regards to Financial Fair Play is becoming increasingly tight with players coming in and so far nobody going out. That could mean that Dimarco could be out of Newcastle’s reach this summer unless some progress is made towards player exits.

Eddie Howe is looking for full-back options, particularly for the left side, but also someone who can back-up Kieran Trippier on the right, which given Dimarco is very predominantly left-sided could mean Newcastle are forced to look elsewhere to find someone who can cover both sides.

Dimarco’s lack of ability to play comfortably on the right isn’t enough to put me off the idea though. I’d absolutely love this one to happen, unfortunately, I don’t see it coming off. At least not this summer.
