Troy Deeney explains why he has snubbed Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak after Fabian Schar blunder

Alexander Isak continued his Newcastle United hot streak on Saturday.

The 25-year-old scored the winner as Newcastle United beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1, bagging himself another tap-in.

It was his 14th goal of the season in all competitions, while Isak has also scored in seven consecutive Premier League games. Alan Shearer and Joe Willock are the only other Newcastle United players who have done that.

This run of form is remarkable, and Newcastle still think there is more to come from Isak.

Alexander Isak not chosen in team of the week

But despite his latest goal, the Swedish striker has not been included in Troy Deeney’s Premier League team of the week for BBC Sport.

Instead, Deeney chose Raul Jimenez as his centre-forward.

“I could’ve given this to Alexander Isak again because he scored and showed the level he’s at, but Jimenez got two goals – yes they were both penalties but you still have to score them,” he said.

“He led the line well and he has to start scoring on a consistent basis for Fulham to get into Europe, which I believe they can.

“He is Mexico’s all-time Premier League goalscorer and he also came back from a horrific injury, so it’s great to see him doing really well.”

So Isak was snubbed in favour of a play who scored two penalties. I guess that is fair enough, and Isak’s goal against Spurs was hardly his most glorious strike.

The bigger surprise is that Deeney did not pick someone like Erling Haaland or Bryan Mbeumo as his striker.

No Newcastle players picked after Troy Deeney blunder

Isak is not in the team of the week, nor are any of his teammates. I do not think that comes as a great surprise, as Saturday was more about a collective team performance rather than individuals.

This comes one week after Deeney had a bit of a nightmare when it came to picking Newcastle United players in his team of the week.

Following Newcastle’s win over Manchester United, Fabian Schar won a place in Deeney’s weekly XI.

However, the issue was that Deeney said Schar is not known for being a good footballer – despite his ability on the ball being his strongest quality.

While there are no Newcastle players in Deeney’s team this week, there is a place for former Toon stopper Matz Sels, who continues to defy belief with Nottingham Forest.
