Newcastle United’s Fabian Schar is a beautiful footballer.
As far as centre-backs go, there are not many who are as unique as Fabian Schar.
The Newcastle United defender reads the game and can defend his goal, but it is on the ball where he is most effective. The 33-year-old’s vision and passing range is what sets him apart, with his potency in possession making him one of Eddie Howe’s most important players.
In years gone by, we have seen Schar pull off some incredible passes. It is a real weapon that Newcastle regularly rely on, and the Magpies are a much worse team when he is unavailable. That is currently a concern, with Schar suspended for Newcastle’s next two games.
Fabian Schar named in Troy Deeney’s team of the week

That is because he was booked during Newcastle’s Carabao Cup win over Brentford and the Premier League victory over Manchester United on December 30th.
His performance at Old Trafford has resulted in him being included in Troy Deeney’s team of the week for BBC Sport. However, the former Watford striker’s comments on Schar question whether he has ever actually paid proper attention to the Swiss centre-back.
After naming Schar and Ipswich Town’s Jacob Greaves at centre-back, Deeney wrote: “I thought both of them were solid, made really good tackles when they needed to. A lot of the work was done in front of them but any work they were called upon to do, they did really well. They were solid in the tackle, they’re not both known for being good footballers but were neat and tidy and did everything you want from a centre-half.”
Deeney is frighteningly wrong about Fabian Schar
Deeney says Schar is not known for being a good footballer. Excuse me?! That is exactly what he is known for!
It is a staggering blunder from Deeney, who could not be more wrong when it comes to Schar.
His passing ability is what makes him special, and it is why it will be so difficult for the Magpies to replace Schar when the time comes. Newcastle are trying to sign Abdukodir Khusanov, who could become Schar’s long-term successor.
This is not the first time this season that Deeney has made a questionable comment about a Newcastle United player. Deeney criticised Tino Livramento back in November, asking what the right-back is actually good at.
