I can’t wait to watch Newcastle United’s ‘perfect match’ evolve following major announcement

After an underwhelming summer transfer window and a steady, if unspectacular, start to the new season, Newcastle United fans had reason to be cheerful on Tuesday evening.

The club announced that Anthony Gordon had put pen to paper on a new ‘long-term’ contract that sees the 23-year-old commit his future to the Magpies.

Gordon was signed from Everton in January 2023 in a £45million deal, quickly becoming a key part of Eddie Howe’s squad and making his full England debut earlier this year, before winning a place in Gareth Southgate’s 26-man squad for Euro 2024.

The winger has netted 15 times and clocked up 11 assists during his 74 appearances for the club so far, but Gordon set to enter his peak years, tere should be plenty more to come.

News of Gordon’s new deal will put an end to any talk that Liverpool will be able to tempt the player back to Merseyside, following a summer of speculation that the Reds were looking to take advantage of the Magpies’ PSR position and move for the forward.

Instead, Newcastle fans will be able to watch Gordon continue to develop under Howe, who is also putting chatter over his future behind him, after Thomas Tuchel was last week appointed England boss.

“I just think the club’s in a great place,” Gordon told the Newcastle website. “Since the takeover it’s just been up and up. Me and the gaffer are a perfect match in terms of style of play. I love it here.”

These thoughts were echoed by his manager and will be music to the ears of fans who can look forward to this partnership developing.

“He is dedicated to improving himself and the team, and when you add that to the quality of his performances and his incredibly high work-rate, it’s clear to see why he has such a special connection with our supporters,” Howe added.

“There’s even more to come from Anthony and I’m excited about what’s ahead for him and us.”

Anthony Gordon’s new contract brings Newcastle three benefits

As well as putting any Liverpool transfer talk to bed and securing one of Europe’s best young players’ peak years, Newcastle supporters are also entitled to feel bullish over the prospects of nailing down their next contract priority.

Alexander Isak will be the next name that sporting director Paul Mitchell wants to cross off his list, with initial talks with the Swede reportedly taking place earlier this year. Isak was a £63million signing from Real Sociedad in August 2022 and his current deal runs until 2028.
