Thomas Tuchel has now made contact over a decision that may impact Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon

Newcastle United star Anthony Gordon is yet to get going in an England shirt.

While the Newcastle star has impressed in flashes for his country, Gordon endured a very frustrating time of things at Euro 2024.

Indeed, people close to the players were reportedly asking why the winger and Cole Palmer were not getting more game time while Gareth Southgate’s side laboured through the group stages.

Palmer, of course, would slowly start to get more minutes and ultimately scored in the final, though Gordon’s omission continued.

The player is thought to have annoyed Southgate by falling off his bike while on his phone during a training session, as well as with his comments about helping make the team more unpredictable.

Gordon has since played a key role under interim manager Lee Carsley on the left wing, although incoming Three Lions boss Thomas Tuchel may have other ideas.

Thomas Tuchel has now made contact with a direct rival of Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon

According to The Sun, Tuchel has contacted Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford to tell him he wants him in the squad, as long as his form warrants it.

Rashford, of course, did not go to the European Championship but Tuchel is understood to have told the player he values him and that not having him around may have actually prevented England from winning the tournament.

A source is quoted as saying: ““Other teams fear his abilities and Tuchel said he believed without Rashford, England didn’t offer a strong attacking threat on the left [where Gordon generally plays] and that made them easier to play against as a lot of the ball came down the right.”

Thomas Tuchel has already reacted to Anthony Gordon’s attitude

It would be a shame to see Gordon dropped for Rashford but just because Tuchel is a big fan of the latter does not mean he doesn’t rate the former too.

Competition for places at international level, of course, is to be expected.

In fact, way back in 2022, Tuchel was said to have been impressed by Gordon’s fearless attitude when the former Chelsea manager came up against the forward during his Everton days.

It’s logical he’d want as many options available to him as possible ahead of the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico.
