Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon is going to be working with Thomas Tuchel at international level.

Thomas Tuchel has been announced as the new England manager, with the FA finally appointing a replacement for Gareth Southgate.

They have opted not to give Lee Carsley the job on a full time basis, while Eddie Howe has also not been chosen to lead his country.

It was recently reported that Howe is happy at Newcastle United after an informal approach, while Alan Shearer has said there were no talks between Howe and England.

Regardless, it is Tuchel who will now be taking charge of the Three Lions, and he inherits a squad that is littered with top quality attackers.

One of those is Anthony Gordon, who has started three out of England’s last four games. He was becoming a regular under Carsley, after Southgate opted against picking the Newcastle United winger at Euro 2024.

Gordon’s relationship with Carsley was certainly helping his international career, but now the 23-year-old has a new manager to impress.

Tuchel will now decide whether or not Gordon plays for his country, and that will depend on how he plays for Newcastle United in the coming weeks and months.

How Anthony Gordon impressed Thomas Tuchel in 2022

But Gordon does have an ace up his sleeve, as he really caught Tuchel’s eye when he was an Everton player back in 2022.

At the end of the 2021/22 season, Everton were battling to avoid relegation. They were able to stay up, with Frank Lampard guiding the Toffees towards survival.

On the way to staying up, Everton picked up a huge 1-0 win over Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea at Goodison Park. Richarlison scored the only goal of the game, but Gordon was the star of the show in Tuchel’s eyes.

The Daily Mail reported in August 2022 that Tuchel wanted to bring Gordon to Chelsea on the back of that performance.

They reported that Tuchel was ‘taken by Gordon’s fearless attitude, his speed and the persistence that went with his talent and saw a player with whom he felt he could work’. The Daily Mail added that Tuchel had also been impressed by Gordon in the reverse fixture in December 2021.

Tuchel finally gets to work with Anthony Gordon

In the end, Gordon did not sign for Chelsea, while Tuchel was sacked by the Blues in September 2022.

As for Gordon, he got a move away from Goodison Park in January 2023, joining Newcastle United for £40million.

His career has skyrocketed since then, with Gordon taking his game to new heights at St James’ Park. That fearless attitude that Tuchel loved has been refined by Howe, who has helped Gordon become ruthless in the final third.

That will no doubt excite Tuchel, who now finally has the chance to work with a player who he wanted to sign two years ago.
