Ex-Newcastle United goalkeeper Shay Given has predicted where the club will finish this coming season. Given spoke to talkSPORT where he was asked about the Magpies’ expectations for the coming season.

“I think there’s a real chance, I don’t wanna get excited here, but top seven, top eight”, the former Ireland international stated.

“If they can build on what they did last season.

“What they did in the second half of last season was phenomenal.”

Since the takeover, there’s been real excitement around the club. The spending in January and the confidence Eddie Howe helped supply to many of the current players worked wonders. So it’s no wonder Newcastle’s expectations for next season are so high. No pressure on Eddie Howe then!

The way Newcastle’s summer is looking, it’s only getting better

Given’s prediction on where Newcastle will finish is similar to what some fans will think. After the Magpies finished 11th with an outstanding second half of the season display, a top ten place should be the challenge for the next campaign.

When you look at the teams that finished just above the Magpies – Wolves, Brighton and Leicester were all beaten by Howe’s Newcastle at some point in the season.

With some tweaks, it’s easy to see why many see Newcastle’s expectations for next season to be pushing for the spots around seventh position.

There will be pressure on Howe, but I expect him to deliver. This summer, improvements are being made and it’s looking very promising. Nick Pope appears to be their new go-to man between the posts and after a successful loan, they now have Matt Targett permanently. Sven Botman looks like he’ll also be announced very soon.

Some Toon fans are highly anticipating the coming season. A staggering number of supporters are queueing online for season tickets.

Newcastle’s summer signings are far from being done. One area they’re looking to strengthen is upfront. But it’s been harder than they would’ve liked to land a forward. They will likely walkway from their pursuit of Hugo Ekitike, meaning the Toon will have to look at alternatives.

With plenty of time to go in the summer window, Newcastle will only strengthen. Thus far they’ve been intelligent with their spending, creating a lot of trust between the owners and the supporters.
