Despite playing as a centre-back, Newcastle United’s Fabian Schar is a huge attacking threat for the club. He already has two goals to his name this season already, scoring against Brighton and Tottenham.
Since the arrival of Eddie Howe, his overall game has improved greatly. Howe is clearly a big fan of the Swiss international, opting to play him in most of his games in charge.
His partnership with Dan Burn has seen the Magpies leak fewer goals than earlier on in the season. Schar is one of many examples of the current players that Howe has turned around since his arrival.
Schar boasts one of the most shots on target of any Newcastle player
The Swiss defender sits in the Magpies’ top five for most shots on target this season. His tally so far is eight, just one behind Joe Willock in fourth, according to the Premier League website.
Schar has shown his attacking capabilities earlier on in his run at Newcastle. Under Rafa Benitez, he was a starter and even scored some key goals. One was a screamer against Burnely back in 2019 from outside the box in a 2-0 win.
Since joining the Magpies, the defender has nine goals from 85 appearances. When you consider he’s a centre-back, that’s an impressive tally.
His deal runs out this summer and considering his form this season, he deserves a new deal. Along with Burn, he’s been one of the best centre-backs at Newcastle this season.
Schar has spoken recently about his future with the Magpies. From what was said, it looks positive and his priorities are with Newcastle.
The Toon are close to mathematically securing survival – they’re 10 points clear of the drop zone. Both Schar and Burn deserve immense credit for the shifts they’ve put in this season.
