Newcastle United defender Fabian Schar has spoken about his future at the club with his contract set to expire this summer. According to SempreMilan, AC Milan are interested.

In the past few months, The Telegraph has reported that both Schar and Jonjo Shelvey are in line for new deals. The 30-year-old has re-found form since the arrival of Eddie Howe and has formed a steady partnership with January signing Dan Burn.

Speaking to The Chronicle, Schar was positive about his future at Newcastle.

He said: “I think I will know soon [about his future]. I enjoy playing for Newcastle United under Eddie Howe. Hopefully, we can say more in a few weeks. But I’m very happy here. Newcastle are my first option.”

Schar has established himself as one of the best defenders at the club, he deserves a contract extension

In the first half of the season, the Magpies were leaking a large number of goals. Howe has been able to improve the backline and began to bring Schar back into the starting XI.

As Steve Bruce’s time on Tyneside went by, the Swiss international fell out of favour. However, he’s now the best centre-back at the club behind Dan Burn.

Captain Jamaal Lascelles has struggled to make many appearances as of late. The skipper is another who looks better under Howe, so it’s a testament to how immense the duo of Schar and Burn are.

With the summer transfer window approaching, Newcastle will look to buy and sell a number of players to improve the squad. The options in defence have to be addressed to help the Magpies progress.

Even if they bring in some better centre-backs, Schar will be a valuable asset to have. It would come as no surprise if the likes of Ciaran Clark and Federico Fernandez left this summer,. they’ve not featured much under Howe.

With the defender seeming confident about the future with the Toon, some fans will be pleased. Credit goes to both Howe and Schar himself for the improvement of his game. He’s been a reliable and consistent performer in 2022.
