Newcastle United fans are desperate to find out what PIF are going to do with St James’ Park.
There are three options. Firstly, Newcastle United could do nothing, and continue to play at St James’ Park with a capacity of 52,350. That would be the cheapest option, but would mean thousands of fans continue to miss out on tickets.
The second option is to expand St James’ Park. That would increase the capacity and mean more money from ticket sales, while it would also ensure that the club does not lose part of its soul. St James’ Park is special, and moving away is a decision that must not be taken lightly.
However, there are redevelopment issues, mainly because of the listed buildings that surround the ground. That could make it a very costly project, with a new report suggesting it could cost Newcastle up to £1billion to increase St James’ Park’s capacity to more than 60,000.
The third option is to build a new stadium. That would take away the complications of listed buildings, and allow Newcastle United to create something that is purpose built. However, it would mean an emotional goodbye to St James’ Park.
Throughout this whole process, Newcastle’s preference has been to remain at St James’ Park. However, there is starting to be more and more noise about a new stadium being built.

PIF’s stance as Newcastle prepare to make St James’ Park decision in 2025
Toon fans will have to wait a little longer before an announcement is made, with Newcastle United confirming that they are now in the second phase of the process and will aim to make a decision in early 2025.
Whether they redevelop or build something from scratch, creating a bigger stadium is going to cost PIF a lot of money. Thankfully, that is something they have lots of, but that does not mean they will simply write a blank cheque.
According to iNews, PIF believe that Newcastle United’s stadium project is a key aspect of the club’s growth. They add that PIF are taking a ‘methodical’ approach over what to do, and that a completely new stadium is seriously being considered.
Difficult decisions ahead for PIF and Newcastle
A decision is getting closer, but it appears that nothing is off the table at this moment in time.
A new stadium is still a possibility, and there is every chance that the Newcastle United owners decide that is the best route to go down. It would perhaps be a better use of funds, and allow Newcastle United to build something that is modern and completely purpose built, rather than effectively patch up St James’ Park and add in a few more seats.
However, there is emotion attached to St James’ Park. It is one of English football’s most iconic grounds, and it can boast the best atmosphere too.
Moving stadiums could risk hurting that atmosphere, which could be to the detriment of the team. Ally McCoist recently warned Newcastle not to move stadiums because of that reason.
One solution Alan Shearer suggested would be to ensure a new Newcastle United stadium was still in the city centre. If a new ground is needed, he wants it to be pretty much next door to St James’ Park.
In a perfect world, Newcastle United find a way to make St James’ Park bigger. However, that is going to present problems. It all depends whether they are problems that PIF are prepared to face.
