Yoane Wissa is finally a Newcastle United player and appears to be delighted that is the case.

Wissa has joined Newcastle United for up to £55million and arrives at St James’ Park ready to hit the ground running.

Indeed, while fellow new arrival Nick Woltemade will no doubt need time to adjust to life in new surroundings, Wissa already boasts a huge amount of Premier League experience. 

For that reason, the 29-year-old looks a crucial signing for Newcastle. Yes, it’s a lot of money to commit to a player approaching 30 and into the final two years of his contract, but the fee will be forgotten about if he scores goals.

Alarmingly, the Wissa to Newcastle deal almost collapsed. It was completed only 30 seconds before the transfer window shut, and more details have now emerged.

According to The Daily Mail, Wissa still had one document to sign by the time 8.58pm BST rolled around on Monday. The extended deadline for Premier League clubs to complete signings was 9pm.

An agent of his ran towards the striker at the Newcastle United training ground and hurriedly explained the situation before getting him to scribble his signature onto a mobile phone.

The deal was then confirmed at 8.59pm, with Wissa said to be close to tears at the prospect of his dream move collapsing.

Following confirmation from the Premier League that they had received the document, the forward is said to have “celebrated like he’d won the Champions League.”

Interestingly, a big part of his desire to leave Brentford is that Wissa wanted to play in the Champions League.

Thanks to the quick-thinking of his agent, he’ll be able to realise that dream later this month.

Newcastle will host Barcelona at St James’ Park when the Champions League returns to Tyneside.

It is a mouth-watering fixture and one in which Wissa will no doubt be desperate to make an impact.
