Newcastle United are well known for having a passionate fan base that follows the team around the country and across Europe.

Without the fans, the club’s history could have gone in a very different direction. Newcastle United supporters rallied hard to get former owner Mike Ashley to sell the club, and now they are reaping the benefits.

The Magpies recently celebrated winning the Carabao Cup, their first domestic trophy since 1955 and one that will always be remembered, no matter what happens in the future.

300,000 Newcastle fans gathered for the trophy celebrations after beating Liverpool at Wembley, and they carried on the festivities by putting on a sensational flag display at St James’ Park ahead of the win against Brentford two weeks later.

Newcastle is a club that has also left fans wondering where they would be if things had gone their way in the past. Newcastle missed out on the Premier League title in 1996 after the pressure got to Kevin Keegan, dropping a 12-point lead to Manchester United.

Despite all the setbacks, Newcastle fans have still backed the club through thick and thin. That feat has been recognised by huge figures outside the club as well, including one football legend who admitted he had a secret love for Newcastle in a 2023 interview.

David Beckham’s love for Newcastle United

David Beckham will always be recognised as one of the greatest footballers to ever play, finding success at several clubs including Manchester United and Real Madrid.

A six-time Premier League winner and one-time Champions League winner, Beckham was simply unstoppable on his day.

While he grew up a Man United fan and solidified his legendary status at the Red Devils, Beckham still had a secret love for the Magpies, which he finally shared in a 2023 interview with Ellis Platten of Away Days during a Classic Football Shirts video.

The topic of Newcastle came up when Beckham was shown a kit from he 1999 FA Cup final, which was during Man United’s treble-winning season.

“Newcastle always had good shirts, to be honest,” Beckham said,

“They always had good shirts. I’ve always loved Newcastle as a club. I love the fans. I love the way they are.

“We played up in Newcastle for England once, and they were amazing. The final was the easiest out of those three games (in the treble-winning season).”

Man United take on Newcastle at St James’ Park on Sunday. There is no doubt Beckham will be supporting the Red Devils, but he will surely still be rooting for the Magpies to return to the Champions League this season.

David Beckham showed true colours after Newcastle United’s Carabao Cup win

The Carabao Cup win was something fans will truly never forget. To end an agonising wait for a trophy in that manner is simply euphoric.

Eddie Howe’s focus is now on getting Newcastle back into the Champions League. They will give themselves a huge boost in their efforts to do so with a win against Man United.

Newcastle were congratulated by many following the cup win, with Alan Pardew calling Howe ‘immortal‘ while former Toon striker Michael Owen congratulated them on beating the club where he became a star.

Amongst the congratulations was a message from Beckham on his Instagram story (h/t The Mirror)

Beckham said: “Amazing moment today for a club with some of the best and most loyal supporters in the game… congratulations to all the Geordies.”

Fans will be hoping Beckham has another reason to congratulate them next season, with Howe and the board eager for more silverware.
