Everyone was talking about one Newcastle United midfielder after Saturday’s win over Fulham, but it was another who was probably the Magpies’ man of the match.
Lewis Miley has been hogging the headlines after his first ever senior goal, and rightly so. His wonderful finish in front of the Gallowgate gave Newcastle United lift off against Fulham, as he became the youngest player to score for the club in the Premier League.
It was an incredible moment, at a time when Eddie Howe’s side were struggling to break down a stubborn Fulham side that had been reduced to 10 men.
But while Miley got the decisive first goal, it was Bruno Guimaraes who stole the show.
The 26-year-old is playing absolutely brilliantly right now, and that form continued against Fulham on Saturday. Newcastle needed a response after their Champions League exit, and Bruno helped ensure they got one.
He was the driving force behind Newcastle’s win, orchestrating proceedings and playing a crucial role in two of the Magpies’ goals. His determined run eventually led to Miley’s goal, while the Brazilian’s audacious outside of the boot cross was met by Dan Burn, whose first effort was saved before bundling in the rebound to make it 3-0.
Bruno was outstanding, much to the delight of his manager Eddie Howe.
Eddie Howe delighted with Bruno Guimaraes performance vs Newcastle
After the game, Howe spoke to the Athletic. He praised Bruno for his performance against Fulham.
“His general performance was of the highest level,” he said.
“That’s why he’s such a big player for us.”

Bruno was Newcastle’s talisman once again on Saturday
Time and time again, we see why Bruno Guimaraes is such a superstar. He takes control of games and works out how his team are going to win. He becomes the conductor, rather than just a passenger.
We saw him try to do it against AC Milan, but it was not enough to keep us in the Champions League. That was absolutely devastating, but Bruno was able to quickly respond and produce yet another outstanding performance that helped guide Newcastle to victory.
Howe has so many key players, yet there has to be no one who is as important as Bruno. What he does cannot be repeated, and that is why Howe believes he is ‘such a big player’ for Newcastle United.
