‘Technically skilled’ player leaves Newcastle United as Paul Mitchell works his magic

There has suddenly been an influx of outgoings at Newcastle United.

It started with Isaac Hayden joining Portsmouth on loan. That was a pivotal move for the player, as Hayden needs to be playing regularly at 29-years-old.

He has been followed out the door, with Charlie McArthur joining Carlisle United on loan. That is a good opportunity for the 19-year-old, who will play alongside Paul Dummett under the management of Mike Williamson.

Toon fans are currently awaiting Miguel Almiron’s Newcastle exit, as the winger prepares to return to Atlanta United.

But in the meantime, another academy player has departed St James’ Park on a temporary basis.

It has been announced that Travis Hernes has left Newcastle United to join Aalborg BK on loan for the rest of the season.

The midfielder has joined the Danish club, and could make his debut on Saturday against Viborg FF.

Aalborg are excited to welcome Hernes, with their sporting director James Gow speaking very highly of the teenager following his arrival from Newcastle.

“Travis is a young, hungry and talented central midfielder who is best as a six, but who can also fill the 8 position,” he told Aalborg’s official website.

“He is technically skilled and has a good, forward flow in his game. He is sure of passing – also under pressure – as well as having dynamism and good acceleration, and overall Travis covers a large area and works hard throughout the entire match, and we look forward to him becoming part of our squad in the next six months.”

Newcastle loans pivotal for Paul Mitchell’s transfer blueprint

The Isaac Hayden loan is a bit of an anomaly, as he is a senior player with a long-term contract who has no future at St James’ Park.

But Newcastle’s other loan deals – McArthur and Hernes – are all about player development.

It is vital that these loan spells go well, as Paul Mitchell sets about implementing his new strategy.

It will rely heavily on the loan market, as Newcastle United recruit players with potential who they know can improve. They will either be improved through coaching or loan moves, as was the case with Yankuba Minteh last season.

It will also be the plan with Vakhtang Salia, who is set to join Newcastle this summer. Eddie Howe says he is unsure what the next step for Salia is, but it feels likely he will be loaned out when he joins the club in August.

The hope will be that these youngsters improve enough to eventually be included in the first-team, or so much that they can be sold for a profit and boost the club’s PSR position.

That will be the aim with Hernes, who joined Newcastle United from Shrewsbury Town in 2023. He is yet to make his competitive debut for the Magpies, but has been in and around the first-team.

The 19-year-old certainly has talent, and hopefully he benefits from playing regular senior football in Denmark during the second half of the season.
