Sven Botman and Alexander Isak were superb at either end of the pitch as Newcastle United beat Wolves in the Premier League.

A comfortable 3-0 win at St James’ Park on Wednesday evening means Newcastle United have now won nine in a row and sit fourth in the Premier League table.

Alexander Isak was flawless against Wolves, scoring either side of half-time before setting up Anthony Gordon for the third.

It means Isak has broken Alan Shearer’s record having scored in eight consecutive Premier League games. His total goal tally for the season has climbed to 17.

Isak was an injury doubt for the Wolves clash after Howe revealed he was left out of the Bromley FA Cup game with a “minor” issue. Thankfully he was cleared fit and was able to extend his hot streak.

Sven Botman lays down challenge to Alexander Isak

At the other end of the pitch, Sven Botman impressed at centre-back. Considering he has recently returned from a major injury, the Dutch defender has not taken long at all to catch back up to speed.

Like Isak, Botman was an injury doubt but passed a late fitness test to continue his run of starts in the Premier League.

After the full-time whistle against Wolves, Botman praised Isak for his scoring streak but named the record he should have his eyes on next.

As quoted by BBC Sport, Botman said: “It is always nice to have people who can make goals out of nowhere.

“I am very happy for Alexander Isak [to score in eight Premier League games in a row]. The record for the Premier League is a bit higher so he should be looking at that now.

“The season is long but we have big targets. If we want to reach that you can see other teams are winning as well.”

Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy currently holds the record having scored in 11 consecutive Premier League matches.

Alexander Isak has four games to smash Premier League record

If Isak plans on beating Vardy’s record like Botman suggests, he will have to score in all of Newcastle’s next four league matches.

On current form, there is no reason why Isak cannot extend his streak, and Newcastle’s upcoming fixtures are favourable.

Up next is a visit from Howe’s former side Bournemouth on Saturday lunchtime. The Cherries are enjoying a strong season up in eighth in the table.

After that, Newcastle travel to bottom-of-the-table Southampton, who have picked up just six points so far in 2024/25. Isak picked up an assist when Newcastle beat Southampton in the opening game of the season.

A home game against high-flying Fulham follows. The Londoners are ninth in the table but have only won one of their last five matches. If Isak manages to score in all three of those games, he would have drawn level with Vardy’s record.

It means Isak’s chance to beat the record would come on 15th February when Newcastle visit Premier League champions Manchester City.
