Newcastle United defender Sven Botman has hinted that his injury nightmare is almost over.

The Dutchman has not played for the Magpies since mid-September, back when Eddie Howe’s side smashed Sheffield United 8-0 on a historic day for the club.

It was a day that also saw Sven Botman score his first ever Newcastle goal. Little did we know we wouldn’t actually see him play again for more than two months.

The 23-year-old has missed Newcastle‘s last 14 games, and that will likely become 15 with the Magpies due to play Everton on Thursday night.

It had been claimed that Botman was due to return to training on Monday, but there was no sign of him in the club’s official update from Tuesday’s session.

Like it has been for more than two months, Botman’s status is up in the air, but the big man has now provided an update that is very encouraging.

Sven Botman delivers three-word update to Newcastle fans

Botman took to his official Instagram account on Tuesday, posting a picture of him celebrating his goal against Sheffield United on his story.

The defender added a three-word caption that will certainly excited Toon fans.

He wrote: “Last few steps.”

It sounds like Botman’s road to recovery is almost complete, as he takes the ‘last few steps’ towards being available for selection once again.

It will be a huge boost to have the former Lille player back, but it could be argued that he does not necessarily walk back into our starting XI.

Eddie Howe will have a tough decision to make as injury woes slowly begin to clear

Jamaal Lascelles has started in Botman’s absence, and the 30-year-old has been exceptional. He has surprised a lot of Toon fans with his performances, reminding everyone of his quality and the fact that he too has improved under Eddie Howe.

It means that the Newcastle manager has a big decision to make once Botman is fit to start, but it is a decision he will relish.

This injury crisis has been an absolute nightmare for the Magpies, but it looks like it is beginning to relent – even if this news does coincide with Nick Pope’s shoulder woes.
