‘Sticking with it’… Stuart Pearce is not giving up on his ludicrous Newcastle prediction

At the start of the 2023/24 Premier League season, Stuart Pearce made a crazy prediction about Newcastle United.

After seeing the Magpies kick off the campaign with a 5-1 win over Aston Villa, he tipped Eddie Howe’s side to do the unthinkable and win the entire Premier League.

It was a ludicrous claim, and one that he refused to back down on despite a stuttering start.

Now we are more than halfway through the Premier League campaign, and it is extremely clear that Newcastle are not going to be champions. They most likely will not qualify for the Champions League either, with Europa League or Conference League our best chance of making it into Europe.

Yet Stuart Pearce is, for some reason, not giving up hope on his crazy prediction.

Stuart Pearce refuses to give up on Newcastle Premier League title prediction

The former Newcastle United defender has appeared on TalkSPORT, and was asked about where he currently stands on his Toon prediction from the start of the season.

“I’m still sticking with it until it’s mathematically impossible!” he said.

“Two predictions I had last summer, Newcastle to win the league and Man City won’t win the league. Still both are up and running!”

Pearce’s Newcastle claim has to be a joke now

If it was not a joke at the start of the season, it certainly is now. Pearce is probably just having a bit of fun, even if his initial prediction was completely over the top.

While we were blistering on the opening day, we were never going to be title contenders. Just getting back into the top four would be a major achievement, but that probably is not going to happen either.

That is largely down to the Magpies’ injury woes, with Eddie Howe always missing a handful of key players. The biggest absentee right now is Nick Pope, although Newcastle have at least been boosted by Alexander Isak and Joe Willock returning to training.

They will hopefully feature against Arsenal on Saturday, who are one of the sides that could ensure Pearce’s other prediction is correct.

He claimed that Manchester City will not win the league, but that will depend on how Arsenal and Liverpool perform in the run-in.

For Newcastle, their big focus is getting back on track and qualifying for some sort of European competition.
