Newcastle United kicked off the 2023/24 Premier League season in scintillating fashion, smashing Aston Villa 5-1 at St James’ Park.

It was a breathtaking performance from Eddie Howe‘s side, who immediately proved that they are going to do everything they can to replicate last season’s success.

The Magpies were rampant at St James’ Park, producing an almost perfect performance to start the new season. Alexander Isak was spectacular in front of goal, but the real star of the show was Sandro Tonali.

The 23-year-old got the nod to start, and justified his selection with a goal on his debut. He oozed class throughout the evening, getting better as the game went on.

We also witnessed a blistering debut from Harvey Barnes, who grabbed a goal and an assist off the bench.

It could not have gone much better for Newcastle, and the Toon Army were in dreamland as they watched their team go top of the Premier League following the 5-1 win.

‘We’re Newcastle and we’re going to win the league’

Obviously it is great to be top, but that does not mean that a title charge is on the way.

However, that did not stop Newcastle fans getting a little bit ahead of themselves.

In the 80th minute, the crowd erupted with a chant of ‘we’re Newcastle and we’re going to win the league!”.

It was obviously tongue in cheek, and at the time Howe’s side were not even set to become the outright leaders of the Premier League. That changed in stoppage time when Barnes made it 5-1, meaning Newcastle eclipsed Brighton’s 4-1 win earlier in the day.

With a goal difference of +4, it means Newcastle are top of the league as it stands. It is a real statement of intent from Howe’s side, who many are predicting to finish outside of the top four.

The Magpies really laid down a marker on Saturday, proving they are actually even more dangerous as they blew away an emerging force in Aston Villa.

Are we going to win the league? Almost certainly not, but that is not going to stop the Geordie faithful enjoying themselves!
