It has been reported that Newcastle could wait until after the January transfer window to appoint a new sporting director.
That would mean that the club goes into a crucial month in the market without serious football expertise behind the scenes.
Former Magpies boss Steve McClaren discussed the situation on TalkSport at 9.15am on Tuesday (30/11).
He feels that the appointment of a sporting director is the most important business Newcastle can do right now and it needs to be done as soon as possible.

“Newcastle made a good appointment in Eddie I think they next need a good sporting director,” said McClaren.
“Because behind the scenes, that’s the tough one. Creating the DNA of Newcastle is going to be very, very difficult and take quite a while.
“Eddie can’t do it on his own, he needs support from football people. The most important appointment next is the sporting director.
“Newcastle have to think long-term and think a little bit like a Brighton. Straight away, they got Dan Ashworth in, sporting director, brought that DNA and then got Graham Potter who could bring that philosophy.”

It would be strange if Newcastle do not get a sporting director ahead of the January transfer window.
It would feel a little bit like shutting the stable door after the horse is bolted. Some football expertise is essential as the new owners navigate their first window.
That is a crucial appointment and will make it more likely that Newcastle get the right type of players through the door to help with the fight against relegation.
