Newcastle United could reportedly delay hiring a director of football until 2022.

That’s according to the Athletic, who state that the club may hold fire on a decision until after the January transfer window. That’s despite the fact Michael Emenalo is ready to take the job.

The January transfer window is set to be pivotal to the Magpies’ season.

Newcastle have had a rotten start to the campaign, and need reinforcements when the window opens. The takeover means we now have money to spend, but that doesn’t mean things will be easy.

January is a notoriously difficult window to do business in, and it could be even tougher if our Premier League safety is majorly in doubt.

Therefore, it is imperative that we get a director of football in before the window opens. We need someone with experience who can get the players required to help Eddie Howe guide the club to safety.

But the Athletic’s report suggests that we might have to wait. Instead, Steve Nickson and Amanda Staveley could be in charge of player recruitment.

A lot of fans are worried about the Athletic’s report, and rightly so.

While the new owners want to take their time to ensure they make the right decision, time isn’t on their side. January is edging closer, and it is a big opportunity for Newcastle boost their slim survival hopes.

Are we jeopardising our Premier League future if we delay a decision over a director of football?

While PIF’s commitment to being process-driven and taking their time is commendable, some supporters are worried about what it could mean for the club’s immediate future.
