Newcastle United defender Kieran Trippier made two massive errors that led to the Magpies being knocked out of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night.
Less than a week after being dumped out of the Champions League, Newcastle are also now no longer in the Carabao Cup either. They were beaten on penalties by Chelsea, despite being just minutes away from advancing to the semi finals.
Callum Wilson had given Newcastle the lead, and then they went into defensive mode. Eddie Howe’s side were defending for their lives, with the Toon boss yet again barely having any options on the bench to change the game.
One player who did come on was Kieran Trippier, but he was the man at fault as Mykhailo Mudryk snatched an equaliser. He got caught in two minds and failed to deal with Malo Gusto’s cross, allowing the Ukrainian to pounce and make it 1-1.
It was a miserable moment for Trippier, but his despair did not end there. The 33-year-old then stepped up to take Newcastle’s second penalty in the shootout, only to miss the target completely.
It was a shocking spot kick from Tripps, whose failure from 12 yards eventually led to Newcastle being knocked out of the Carabao Cup.
Shay Given was desperate for Kieran Trippier to score vs Chelsea
Seeing Trippier make two massive errors was heartbreaking to watch, and now Shay Given, who was on punditry duty for Sky Sports on Tuesday night, has shared what he said about the Toon defender off air before the penalty shootout.
“We were in the studio saying we hope if anyone is going to miss we hope it’s not Tripps because of the mistake in the game,” he said on Sky Sports Main Event.
“You trust Trippier. The many goals he’s scored for both Newcastle and Atletico, and even for England. Free kicks, he’s brilliant. Set play specialist.
“He’s just dragged it wide. He’s tried to be too precise. Is the goal they conceded playing on his mind a little bit at that point.”

Newcastle fans must support Trippier
Given’s feelings about Trippier will have been shared by every Toon fan. Of course, we didn’t want anyone to miss, but there was added reason to hope that Trippier hit the back of the net.
He has made some big errors as of late, and he was guilty of another on Tuesday night. His confidence appears to be low, so it was extremely brave of him to take a penalty.
But his bravery led to another confidence-shattering moment, as he completely missed the target. As Given says, he tried to be too precise and paid the price.
Trippier is going through a massively tough spell at the moment, and hopefully he gets out of it as soon as possible. As fans, we must do all we can to help him do that.
