Shay Given: Injured Kieran Trippier will still be important for Newcastle

Shay Given believes that Newcastle United right-back Kieran Trippier can have a continued positive influence on Eddie Howe’s side despite being injured.

The England international went down injured early in the second half of Sunday’s clash against Aston Villa.

The former Atletico Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur star had made it two free-kick goals in as many games with his match-winning set-piece in the first half.

But when the 31-year-old went down, St James’ Park seemingly took a collective pause for breath and hoped that the number 15 had suffered nothing more than a knock.

But the Toon Army’s worst fears were realised when it was confirmed that Trippier has broken the fifth metatarsal in his left foot.

According to the Athletic, Trippier is keen to undergo surgery to return to action as quickly as possible, but such breaks can take between two to three months to heal.

It’s very unlikely that PIF’s first ever Newcastle signing will be fit to return until after the March international break.

As a result, Trippier is likely to miss at least five Premier League matches.

Although the Magpies have built momentum with three consecutive Premier League wins, we cannot afford to feel sorry for ourselves following the hammer blow that Trippier faces a spell on the side-lines.

Although he won’t be able to lead by example on the pitch, former Newcastle goalkeeper Given believes that Trippier’s influence off the pitch can be just as important.

The former Republic of Ireland international responded to Trippier’s Instagram post along with several Newcastle players.

With Howe’s men picking up 10 points from a possible 12 since Trippier arrived to the club, Rio Ferdinand believes that Newcastle will now definitely beat the drop.

Speaking on his latest FIVE podcast, Ferdinand said: “What a signing Kieran Trippier’s been. Two massive goals.

“I think the three teams that are in the bottom three now will go down. That’s it. Newcastle are out.”
