Burnley manager Sean Dyche can understand why Fabian Schar’s ‘clumsy’ challenge was not given as a foul, but he felt the key decision went ‘against’ his side in the 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United.

The Clarets’ goalkeeper Nick Pope came charging out of his goal to collect a Joe Willock cross in the 40th minute.

Although the England international claimed the cross cleanly, as he was coming down, he collided with Schar and the ball squirmed out of his grasp.

Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson pounced on the loose ball and smashed it into the back of the net.

Wilson’s strike proved crucial, as the Magpies and Eddie Howe earned their first win of the season, which brought us level with Burnley on 10 points after 15 Premier League games.

Dyche’s team had chances to get back in the game and had a late Jay Rodriguez goal chalked off for offside.

But the 50-year-old accepts that the Magpies’ goal, which came via a Pope ‘mistake’ changed the complexion of the game.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Burnley manger Sean Dyche said: “Unfortunately, a mistake goes against us and they go into half-time a goal up against the feel of the game and the performance.

“It is a clumsy challenge from their player [Schar] but it is not a deliberate one so I can see why it has not been given as a foul, so I don’t want to overegg that, but it has been one that has gone against us.

“Nick Pope has been fantastic for us, he has actually done what he is meant to do, he has caught the ball, but he lands into the other player’s body, the ball comes off his head and out of Pope’s hand.”

Howe can leapfrog his former side in the Premier League table if the Magpies better Burnley’s result next weekend.

Newcastle travel to Leicester and the Clarets host West Ham. Both games kick off at 2pm on Sunday.
