Newcastle have ignited their season with a 1-0 over Burnley thanks to a goal by Callum Wilson.

This felt like a must-win game for Newcastle and they did win it in front of a St James’ Park crowd who roared them over the line.

This was a deserved victory, and a first clean sheet of the season laid the foundation, with strong performances over the pitch.

After the game, Toon legend Alan Shearer took to Twitter to react to the win, which was very much needed.

And after the game, Wilson gave an interview to Sky Sports News, saying at 5.15pm: “It has been a tough week mentally, physically and emotionally. It is good to top it with a win.

“I came here to score goals and play for a big club. I want to be that match-winner and today it has been that. A little bit of a ricochet going around, I just tried to sniff out an opportunity where the ball would drop and I did that.

“Since Eddie Howe has come in it has been fantastic. We knew what we were going to get with him. I gave the lads a heads up about what to expect training to consist of.

“Everyone has applied themselves great. We haven’t got the win up till now. It has been a long time coming. Hopefully it can be a catalyst for better things. Against a team like Burnley, it’s important to get the first goal and when we did that they get to come out a bit more and credit to the boys at the back for a first clean sheet.

“We can’t get carried away, there’s a lot of work to do but we’ll use this as a springboard.”

Keeping Wilson fit is so important for the shape of Newcastle’s season because he is the man who relishes the pressure of scoring goals.

He netted against Norwich in midweek and again here. They have been big goals which have earned Newcastle four points.

The coming games will be hard but with Wilson in the team, Newcastle will always carry a threat and so it proved again today.
