Alan Shearer shared a special moment with Newcastle United fan and artist Sam Fender after the Carabao Cup final.
Newcastle United fans will remember Sunday’s Carabao Cup final for a very, very long time. Goals from Dan Burn and Alexander Isak ended the 70-year wait for a trophy.
The behind-the-scenes celebrations at Wembley were incredible for everyone, and an open-top bus parade has been scheduled for later this month.
After the match, Alan Shearer text Eddie Howe thanking him for the job he has done with this team. He – and his players – have etched their names into the club’s history forever.
Shearer attended the match with family before heading to Boxpark Wembley to celebrate with the players and staff. He also took a moment to contact local artist Sam Fender.
Alan Shearer’s FaceTime call with Sam Fender
Fans may have noticed Sam Fender’s name on Newcastle shirts in the Carabao Cup – the Geordie artist sponsored the kit, promoting his new album while also raising money for community projects.
Newcastle wore Sam Fender special edition shirts in the quarter-final and semi-finals of the Carabao Cup, and his name was also visible in the final.
Fender was in Berlin on tour during the match, but he gave a special nod to Burn by changing one of his lyrics. After the final, Shearer gave Fender a call and he shared all the details on the latest episode of The Rest is Football.
“I was with his agent yesterday and we FaceTimed Sam just after the game. He was crying,” Shearer said.
“The tears were real tears of joy and happiness and everything else.
“Because Sam’s song Seventeen Going Under was blasting out of Wembley, and all the Newcastle fans were singing it. The players were dancing to it. So, you can imagine from his point of view as well why he was so emotional — as were we all.”
A special day for Newcastle United fans
After waiting 70 years, Newcastle have finally got their hands on silverware again.
It was an emotional day for all involved, even Howe who spoke brilliantly about his late mother and what the trophy meant to him personally.
Bruno Guimaraes gave an emotional speech after the full-time whistle, suggesting he wanted to become a legend similar to Shearer.
