Newcastle United forward Callum Wilson has had his say on Brentford striker Ivan Toney. He left The Magpies in 2018 after a three-year stint at the club with multiple loan spells. The Telegraph have reported that the Toon are considering a £30 million bid to get Toney back to Tyneside this summer, but Wilson feels that moving on may carry a degree of risk.
Toney has had an impressive campaign with the newly-promoted Bees this season, so it’s no surprise there’s been talks of a move elsewhere this summer and a call-up for England.
But Wilson assessed the potential problems he might face should he try to take the step up, even with his own club reportedly interested.
He told the ‘Footballer’s Football Podcast: “You talk about he wants to play for England, he’s playing and scoring at Brentford. You go to a bigger team the competition is bigger, you might not even be playing as much and being on the bench a lot more.
“Really then you’re not going to be in Gareth Southgate’s mind, so you need to stay relevant and the main guy.
“Yeah he can go to another team and he might take on that challenge and thrive but there is always that risk of the other side.
“There is always going to be players, the higher you go, two or three of the same quality players in that position. Competition is high.”

Wilson is definitely speaking experience here, there are some similar parallels with himself Toney
Callum Wilson did a similar thing to Ivan Toney. Both had performed well in their first campaigns after being promoted to the Championship.
Wilson netted 5 goals from 13 appearances in his first Premier League season for Bournemouth. The now Newcastle striker built up his reputation by becoming a consistent regular for the Cherries. Also, Wilson might see a lot of himself in Toney.
As previously mentioned the Brentford striker did play for Newcastle. He was there for three years before he was sold after the Magpies’ first season back in the Premier League.
The co-host of the ‘Footballer’s Football Podcast’ recently posted on social media that he’s close to returning from injury. He sustained an injury against Manchester United back in December and hasn’t played a minute in 2022.

With three games left of the season, the Toon number nine will hope he can still add to his tally before the season ends. Perhaps we might see him in some capacity against Manchester City.
He will certainly bolster the Magpies’ attacking options. Chris Wood has offered presence and strong hold up play in the meantime. However, he’s struggled to consistently find the net, with only two goals this season.
Considering the outstanding 2022 Newcastle have had, Wilson will only make them stronger. Furthermore, they still have Kieran Trippier hoping for a return before the season ends too.
