Rio Ferdinand believes Newcastle have done something ‘unbelievable’ following reports that a fee has been agreed with Arsenal for Joe Willock.

There has been speculation about the midfielder all summer. There’s been worries that he’ll stay at Arsenal, as well as talk about another loan move to St James’ Park.

Other clubs have also been linked, but it looks like Newcastle are going to get their man. Not only that, but it looks set to be a permanent deal.

On Sunday evening, various outlets reported that the Magpies had agreed a fee with Arsenal to sign the 21-year-old. The Athletic claim it is in excess of £20million, while Sky Sports have been more specific at £25million.

Regardless of the fee, it’s a wonderful piece of business if we can get the deal done. All that is left is personal terms, which shouldn’t be too difficult. The hard part was negotiating with Arsenal.

And Mike Ashley sympathiser Rio Ferdinand is full of praise for the Magpies.

Ferdinand believes Newcastle are signing a ‘really good talent’ in Joe Willock

“I don’t know how Arsenal have let Joe Willock go,” Ferdinand said on the FIVE YouTube channel.

“The guy scores goals from midfield man. I really like him.

“I don’t understand that. Newcastle have done unbelievable well to get him by the way, I think he’s a really good talent.”

While he’s not a popular figure among Toon fans, Ferdinand is right. You have to question why Arsenal are letting him go.

Willock was incredible last season for Newcastle, scoring eight goals from midfield.

Meanwhile, Arsenal had a horrible campaign that ended with no European football.

Obviously, they’re selling him to cash in, but they’ll need re-invest the money correctly. But that’s their problem.

Arsenal’s loss is our gain, and it looks like our number one target this summer is on his way to the North East.

It will be an unbelievable piece of business if it’s completed. It’s just a shame it wasn’t done much earlier in the window.
