Newcastle United fans react as Rio Ferdinand demands answers from Manchester United owners after European Super League collapse

On March 22nd, Rio Ferdinand told Newcastle fans to buy the club themselves if they want Mike Ashley out.

One month later, and the former defender is begging for answers from the Manchester United owners after the European Super League debacle.

The Red Devils dropped out of the proposed breakaway league on Tuesday night, as the ESL project collapsed.

Manchester United were one of six English clubs to be involved, looking to join a competition where there was effectively no competition.

The story has rocked the world of football, and the fallout is surely not over.

Ed Woodward has resigned as chairman of Manchester United, much to the delight of supporters.

But Ferdinand wants answers from the Glazers.

“We want to know the answers,” Ferdinand said in a video posted on his official Twitter.

“It’s all vague. We want to know why you went forward with this. How you thought the fans would be okay with this. What was your reasons behind doing this.

“You can’t just come in and run the institutions of this football club like Man United, Liverpool…all these big football clubs, the six clubs that we’ve got and think you can just be a faceless person.”

So it’s okay for Ashley to do what he wants with Newcastle, but not okay for the Glazers to do what they want with Manchester United? Suppose it depends on who is selling your caps…

The hypocrisy is startling. And the sad thing is you knew it was coming.

Ferdinand’s analysis of the situation at Newcastle has been embarrassing.

To tell Toon fans to buy a £300million club is just ridiculous. The ironic thing is that the Newcastle United Supporters Trust have since launched the 1892 Pledge.

But while Newcastle fans persist with an owner who has neglected their club, Ferdinand is begging for answers from his former employers.

Unsurprisingly, Toon fans on Twitter have no sympathy. Some have even told Ferdinand how he can deal with the situation – round up his money and buy the club.
