Newcastle United fans need a lift right now. Monday’s takeover blow has sucked the remaining life out of a deflated fanbase.
Arbitration was meant to give Mike Ashley his route out of St James’ Park. It was meant to re-open the door for PCP Capital Partners to buy the club.
It may still do that, but not until 2022.
On Monday, the club confirmed that arbitration has been adjourned until early 2022 because of ‘issues with the disclosure of evidence’.
That means that another season with Ashley at the helm is on the cards.
It also means that Newcastle United have been standing still for nothing.
So far, the club have made no first-team signings. That’s despite the fact that the squad is weaker than it was when the 2020/21 Premier League season ended.
Newcastle need reinforcements, and they need them now.
Newcastle must sign Joe Willock
The one player Newcastle desperately need is Joe Willock.
The midfielder was sensational last season, scoring eight goals in 14 appearances for the Magpies.
His desire to get into the box from midfield added an extra dimension to our attack, making us less reliant on Callum Wilson for goals.
That’s why it is essential that we bring Willock back.
The signs are good. News broke last week that the Magpies are in talks about re-signing the 21-year-old, with the Telegraph claiming that Newcastle are close to completing a loan deal.
It’s a signing that Alan Shearer would certainly approve.
The Toon legend told the Newcastle United Supporters Trust in May: “It might be out of his [Willock’s] hands, but I really hope we try to break the bank to bring him because he’s been incredible over the last few months.”
However, seven days on and a deal is yet to be done.
With the disappointment of Monday’s takeover news, fans desperately need something to celebrate.
A Willock return would be just that. Even if it is only on loan, signing a player who automatically gets into our starting XI would at least give fans some hope ahead of the new season.
Right now, supporters are expecting a relegation battle.
While signing Willock wouldn’t guarantee mid-table obscurity, it would certainly give supporters a lift.
Any signing would be celebrated on Tyneside right now, but none more than Willock.
Newcastle fans need a lift. That’s why the club must sign Willock as soon as possible.
