Liverpool defender Nat Phillips is reportedly a transfer target for Newcastle this summer.
Earlier this week, it was reported that the Magpies have already made contact over signing the central defender.
He would apparently cost a minimum of £12 million after an impressive breakthrough season at Anfield.
And in an interview with Goal, he has hailed a man who could be a teammate come next season – Callum Wilson.
“It’s funny, really, because probably my toughest games were the ones you wouldn’t expect,” Phillips says.
“I know myself that the Newcastle away game [in December] was a ropey one.
“I struggled against Callum Wilson. He didn’t give me a moment’s rest. He was hugely physical.
“It was my third game in the Premier League, and it was a bit of a lesson for me really. When I think of tough opponents, his name is high on that list.”
Phillips would be a solid addition
Phillips is a solid, reliable central defender who is still only 24. The best is yet to come from him.
He’s not the quickest but that’s something he can work on. He attacks everything in the air and keeps it simple on the ball.
He might even go on to be an England defender in the future, when you look at the options available to Gareth Southgate now.
To do that, he needs to be playing regular football and Newcastle could potentially offer him that.
And from Phillips’ point of view, it would be a bonus to only face Wilson in training, not in games.
