The Portuguese was a target for the Magpies’ new owners last month according to reports.

Newcastle are set to appoint a new director of football who will see to matters relating to scouting and recruitment.

The club have just confirmed Eddie Howe as the new manager.

And this appointment is next on the agenda for PIF and Amanda Staveley.

Michael Emenalo is reportedly leading the race for the position.

Edwin van der Sar has also been mentioned.

But perhaps Campos could now come back into the frame, with Le10 Sport reporting that he will not be heading to Italian club Genoa, who had approached him.

Campos would be a terrific addition

Emenalo seems the most likely to get the job at this stage.

But we saw how things unfolded with Unai Emery, meaning it could be someone else.

Campos achieved amazing things at AS Monaco and then Lille.

He discovered the likes of Bernardo Silva and Fabinho before turning massive profits on them.

He is a highly intelligent and shrewd man who could potentially work wonders with Newcastle’s budget.
