Luis Campos is the latest name to be linked with the sporting director role at Newcastle United.
The new owners are looking to take the club in a different direction, and want to appoint a sporting director before they bring in their own manager.
Now Campos has entered the frame, another illustrious option who could come to St James’ Park.
The news broke on Sky Sports News on Wednesday afternoon, with reporter Gary Cotterill stating that the 57-year-old is being considered for the role.
Who is Luis Campos?
Campos is one of the best sporting directors in world football, known for his ability of finding relatively cheap stars that quickly blossom even further before being sold on for a huge profit.
He was behind the Monaco team that won the Ligue 1 title in 2017, which included players such as Kylian Mbappe, Fabinho and Bernardo Silva.
He was also Lille’s sporting director between 2017 and 2020, with Les Dogues beating PSG to the Ligue 1 title last season thanks to an influx of smart signings courtesy of Campos.
If Campos does come to Newcastle, the new owners will be hoping he can have a similar impact. However, it is set to be a huge job. This club won’t become an overnight success.
Amanda Staveley and co have some big decisions to make in the comings days, weeks and months.
Their first big call will likely be hiring a sporting director. That decision will then influence who they go for as manager.
If they want a big name, they won’t find many bigger than Campos. Newcastle fans have reacted to the news on Twitter, and would be very happy if ‘the wizard of capital gains’ arrived at St James’ Park.
