Report states who is leading the race to be director of football at Newcastle

The new Newcastle United owners are yet to appoint a director of football.

After almost three weeks in charge of the Magpies, the new owners have made just one major decision – parting ways with Steve Bruce.

Progress behind the scenes is seemingly slow, which is no surprise considering how quickly this takeover went through.

Fans are keen to see a new manager appointed, but that might not happen until a director of football arrives at St James’ Park.

That’s what the Daily Star claim, with Newcastle wanting the DOF to have an input on who replaces Bruce.

But who will be the club’s director of football?

Wilcox, Campos or Overmars to be Newcastle United’s director of football?

According to the Daily Star, Jason Wilcox is the leading candidate to become Newcastle’s DOF.

The Manchester City man was linked the day the takeover went through, and the Star now claim that the Magpies plan to hold a second round of talks with the 50-year-old.

They add that Marc Overmars and Luis Campos are also contenders for the role, despite Wilcox leading the race.

Interestingly, Wilcox is probably the least enticing of the three options proposed.

Campos is known for his ability to unearth gems and build title winning times, like he did at Monaco and Lille.

Meanwhile, Overmars has built similarly impressive teams at Ajax. On top of that, his potential arrive could help bring Erik ten Hag to St James’ Park – something of a dream duo for the new Newcastle.

But Wilcox shouldn’t be underestimated. He played an important role at Manchester City following their 2008 takeover, and the new Toon owners will hope he can have a similar impact if they do decide to hand him the job.
