There were some special stories coming out of Newcastle United’s 3-0 win over Manchester United, but the best has to be Emil Krafth’s.
It was great to see Lewis Hall score, and it was excellent that Tino Livramento played so well in the Carabao Cup again. Sean Longstaff being captain was brilliant, as was Joe Willock’s first Toon start since May.
But the real headline was Emil Krafth starting his first competitive game since August 2022.
The Sweden international had been out of action for more than a year due to a knee injury, but recently returned to training.
It looked likely that he would be involved, and that was the case when Eddie Howe’s starting lineup was announced. There was Krafth, due to play at centre-back alongside Paul Dummett.
It was a big ask for the £5million man to play in the middle of defence on his first game back after 14 months, but Krafth breezed through the game to keep a clean sheet and advance to the quarter finals of the Carabao Cup.

Everyone is so happy for Emil Krafth after beating Man United 3-0
After the game, Krafth was understandably delighted. He took to his official Instagram account to deliver a message to supporters.
He wrote: “400 something days later, incredible feeling to be back again! What a performance from the team! Thanks for all the travelling fans.”
The defender’s post prompted so many replies, with past and present Newcastle players telling Krafth how happy they are for him. There were messages from the likes of Allan Saint-Maximin and Isaac Hayden, while fellow Swede Alexander Isak showed him some love.
Bruno Guimaraes also replied, writing: “You’re unbelievable bro.”
Sean Longstaff added: “So proud of you buddy.”
Real togetherness at Newcastle United under Eddie Howe
There is real togetherness at Newcastle United right now, and that is summed up by how happy everyone is for Krafth.
Just seeing him play after so long out with injury was good, but to see him return and play so well was magical.
It just shows the depth Newcastle have right now, and it has helped Howe’s side reach the last eight of the Carabao Cup.
