Newcastle legend Mick Quinn believes the Magpies were given a ‘gentle reminder’ of where they are with last night’s defeat to Everton.

Eddie Howe’s side lost 1-0 at Goodison Park, with Alex Iwobi grabbing a late winner for the Toffees. It was a rotten game of football, and the Newcastle players will be massively disappointed with their performance.

The first half wasn’t bad. We enjoyed the best moments, and arguably should have been ahead. But the second half became a scrappy affair, and Newcastle never re-found their rhythm.

It means the Magpies have now lost back-to-back games, having previously gone nine games unbeaten.

‘Scrappy game’ is a ‘gentle reminder’ for Newcastle says Mick Quinn

After the game, Quinn gave his thoughts on Twitter.

He wrote: “It was a very scrappy game last night and with 10 men they were there for the taking.

“Eddie and the boys have done brilliantly well this year, but that performance was a gentle reminder that there is still work to be done and the squad needs improving again for next season.”

Quinn is right about squad improvements

Newcastle have lost two of the past 11 games. That is an excellent run of form. Howe has done brilliantly to move Newcastle away from the relegation zone. He and the players deserve a lot of credit.

But the defeat to Everton was a reality check. It was a game we should have won but didn’t.

Multiple Magpies didn’t perform at Goodison Park, with Bruno Guimaraes the only player who can be proud of his performance.

As Quinn say, it’s a gentle reminder that Newcastle aren’t the finished article. Improvements still need to be made, and they will over the summer.

But we’re still so much better than we were, and that must not be lost in the disappointment of last night. Yes, we were poor. Yes, it was massively underwhelming.

But it’s just one game – we aren’t going to be able to hit the same heights every week, football just doesn’t work like that. One really poor performance in 11 games is really impressive considering where we were at the start of the season.

Perspective is needed, and we are still in the formative stages of this new Newcastle United journey.
