Newcastle United fans and owners PIF may be a long way off seeing Yoane Wissa actually start for the club.
Wissa’s injury nightmare has been a major frustration amongst Newcastle United supporters for weeks now.
PIF weren’t comfortable with Newcastle’s deal for Wissa, given he was approaching 30 by the time they paid an initial £50million to sign him.
The striker missed only 16 games through injury at Brentford in four years but is already on course to miss more than that this season.
How many games Yoane Wissa missed through injury during his entire Brentford career. How much of a difference could he have made?
Wissa still isn’t fit for Newcastle United and Eddie Howe has now confirmed that he is “almost entering a pre-season” with the club’s medical staff.
While it makes sense that Newcastle wouldn’t rush Wissa back into action, the rather vague updates in regard to his actual fitness have frustrated fans.
Sadly, a recent update makes it even worse.

Yoane Wissa may not start a game for Newcastle United until 2026
Wissa isn’t likely to play for Newcastle in November, with a December return now seen as likely.
Indeed, The Daily Mail’s Craig Hope said on a video posted on YouTube: “I think now, we’re looking at mid-December, if not even later for Yoane Wissa.”
Even more alarmingly, Hope then spoke to fans in the comments section of his video. When replying to one particular supporter, Hope wrote: “If you’re talking starting a game, 2026 is now likely.”
PIF’s gamble is yet to pay off and Newcastle United may suffer from it going forward
It’s difficult to imagine the Newcastle United owners committing so much money for a player of Wissa’s profile again.
That’s not really Wissa’s fault, of course, he cannot have done much about his injury.
Still, the idea that Howe will be backed with another Premier League proven player approaching 30 now seems remote.
Did Newcastle United make a mistake in paying £50m for Yoane Wissa?
PIF weren’t comfortable with that deal and little about it since would give them an awful lot to change their mind.
That may shape Newcastle’s transfer strategy going forward.
Wissa is desperate to return for Newcastle and there’s still hope he can contribute this season. Thus far, however, it’s been little short of a disaster.
