Eddie Howe has made a signing at Newcastle United that PIF aren’t comfortable with at all

Not every summer signing has hit the ground running at Newcastle United this season.

The Magpies brought in six new players, as the Newcastle United squad received a major makeover.

The biggest arrival was Nick Woltemade, who cost a club-record fee of £69million. Woltemade has been excellent since his arrival, despite concerns over his price tag and suitability for English football.

Malick Thiaw has been impressive too, and is suddenly keeping Fabian Schar out of the starting XI. That is impressive considering how important the Swiss centre-back has been during Eddie Howe’s tenure.

Out of the six players Newcastle United signed this summer, only one of them is yet to make their Toon debut. That is Yoane Wissa, who is on the sidelines due to a knee issue.

Wissa’s injury is worse than initially feared, meaning the 29-year-old will have to wait a little bit longer to make his first appearance. That is frustrating for Eddie Howe, who managed to convince the Newcastle United owners to spend a lot of money on an ageing striker.

PIF did not want to spend so much on Yoane Wissa

Following news of Wissa’s injury setback, Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie has provided fresh insight on the striker’s transfer from Brentford to Newcastle United.

Downie notes that PIF were not ‘comfortable’ with spending so much money on Wissa, but the deal ultimately went through on deadline day with the Magpies desperately needing one more striker.

“They put so much time and effort and money into signing Yoane Wissa from Brentford,” he said.

“£55million, £50million plus £5million in add-ons. It wasn’t a deal that PIF were comfortable with.

“They did not want to spend that sort of money on a soon-to-be 29-year-old. They did not want to spend that money on a player who there’s not going to be much resale on. He’s going to be 33 when his deal ends, but it shows how desperate Newcastle were.”

No doubt Yoane Wissa will come good for Newcastle United

Eddie Howe pushed to sign Yoane Wissa, despite knowing that Newcastle would have to overspend.

It was a case of needs must, but the Magpies are yet to benefit from their calculated gamble. The idea was for Wissa to play a starring role while Woltemade acted as deputy, but instead it is the giant German who is soaking up the adulation of the Toon Army.

But Wissa’s time will come. He is tailor-made to succeed in this Newcastle United team, which is exactly why Howe pushed to sign him.

It is going to be very exciting to watch Wissa dovetail with Woltemade, and they are going to have to with the volume of fixtures that Newcastle have. It is just a shame that the DR Congo international is not available now, as it means Woltemade is under a lot more pressure to stay fit and score goals.
