Eddie Howe is still unable to confirm when Yoane Wissa will make his Newcastle United debut.

Newcastle United fans are still yet to see the £55million man in action, with a knee injury ruining his start to life at St James’ Park.

The hope was that Yoane Wissa could feature against Everton next Saturday, but that now appears to be unlikely. It has since been reported that Wissa could be absent until December, which would rule him out of at least another three games.

Now Eddie Howe has addressed the striker’s status, admitting that he cannot reveal when Wissa will be fit enough to play for his side.

Eddie Howe says Yoane Wissa is looking good in Newcastle United training

Ahead of Newcastle United vs Manchester City on Saturday evening, Eddie Howe has been speaking to the media.

Wissa will definitely miss that game, with the Newcastle United manager confirming that the 29-year-old is still yet to train with the rest of his Toon teammates.

“He’s working well,” Howe said.

“He’s not back training with us yet but he’s close. He’s working with the sports science team and almost entering a pre-season with them currently. He’s done a lot of work, he’s looked good and looked better with every session.

“He’s close to training with us but before he gets to there it’s difficult to give you a return date.”

Newcastle United are running out of time with Yoane Wissa

While Newcastle are convinced that Wissa will come good, the expectation was that he would already be thriving in black and white.

Instead, it is almost December and one of Newcastle’s most expensive signings ever is still yet to kick a ball for the club.

Wissa’s move to Tyneside has been a disaster so far, and his short-term future very much remains unclear.

Howe is unable to confirm when his number nine will return, while there is the looming issue of the Africa Cup of Nations.

DR Congo are set to compete in the tournament, and will almost certainly look to include Wissa in their squad. That creates a further issue for the Magpies, who could lose their summer signing for even longer.

AFCON is due to begin on 21st December, with the final scheduled for 18th January 2026.

It remains to be seen if Wissa will be involved, but it is difficult to imagine him turning down the chance to represent his country at a major tournament.
