Newcastle United executives have been made aware of a new St James’ Park statistic just weeks before a decision on a new stadium is set to be made.
After years of feasibility studies, fan forums and planning, it finally looks as though fans will learn the fate of St James’ Park.
There are currently two options for the ground, with one being to expand St James’ Park to a capacity of around 60,000, or build a new stadium just a short walk away from the existing site. The belief is that PIF want Newcastle United in a new stadium in the future to maximise matchday income and grow the club commercially.
Reports have revealed that Newcastle are looking to build a 70,000-seater stadium in Leazes Park, bigger than the 65,000 that was originally planned by the club. It was revealed that the spectacular turnout to Newcastle’s Carabao Cup celebrations was the main reason why they decided to increase capacity.
While a new stadium will be welcomed by many fans, the thought of moving away will be far too much for some. With PIF left with a big decision to make, a new St James’ Park statistic has been revealed which will surely finalise their decision.

St James’ Park was the most full Premier League stadium in 2024/25
Newcastle fans are known for being passionate, and St James’ Park is widely recognised as being a ground that very few want to play at.
Bryan Mbeumo admitted it is difficult to play at St James’ Park, while Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy said Newcastle is his favourite away day.
Since the takeover, fans can barely get a ticket to the game, with the waiting list for season tickets exceeding 50,000 — almost enough to fill St James’ Park again.
GiveMeSport revealed that Newcastle had the highest percentage of seats filled in the Premier League throughout the 2024/25 campaign, with an average of just 71 seats not taken each game.
| Capacity | Average attendance | Percentage filled | |
| 52,258 | 52,187 | 99.9% |
Those numbers suggest that it is now time to move the Magpies into a new stadium, and that Newcastle executives should have no worries about filling a new ground. They could very well take a “build it and they will come” attitude with it, as it is almost a guarantee that attendance will be high.
How much will Newcastle United’s new stadium cost?
Whenever it happens, it will be an emotional day when it comes time to say goodbye to St James’ Park. It is a move Newcastle fans have seen in the Premier League very recently when Everton said their emotional goodbyes to Goodison Park.
It is reported that Everton paid around £750m for their new stadium (BBC), but Newcastle will have to pay significantly more to get the ground of their dreams.
Newcastle’s new stadium is estimated to cost £1.2bn and will take several years to complete. By no means will this be an overnight project. The club are not expected to move into the new stadium until the 2030s where a lot could have changed.
A decision on the new stadium is expected at the end of June, which could be the same time CEO Darren Eales officially leaves the club and a replacement is hired.
