The statue of Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer is finally moving to St James’ Park.

The striker was immortalised in 2016, but the former number nine’s statue wasn’t actually placed on club land.

The Shearer statue instead resides on Barrack Road, just outside of St James’ Park. Fans stand next to it after every match while they’re waiting for the bus home.

There are two statues outside of St James’ Park at the minute. There’s Sir Bobby Robson and Jackie Milburn. Now Shearer is going to join them thanks to the new owners.

Newcastle begin work on moving the Alan Shearer statue

Shortly after buying the club, Amanda Staveley confirmed her desire to move the statue.

“I’ve always wondered why Alan Shearer’s statue is outside stadium land,” she told the Athletic on October 8th.

“That’s something that has to be changed, and it will be.”

Now Staveley’s words are becoming a reality.

Pictures have circulated on social media of work beginning to change the statue’s location. Instead of being outside the ground, it is set to move next to the Sir Bobby Robson statue on the south west corner.

Small changes mean a lot to Toon fans

It’s the second change to St James’ Park involving Shearer.

Staveley and co recently changed the name of Nine Bar back to Shearer’s. That’s what it was originally known as before Mike Ashley spitefully renamed it in 2013.

These are small changes made by the new owners that mean a lot to supporters. It further solidifies their popularity on Tyneside.
