‘Personally’… 31-year-old Newcastle player now explains why Sunday was a good day despite losing 4-1

Newcastle United did not have many reasons to be positive after losing 4-1 to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, but Callum Wilson certainly has reason to be cheerful.

The 31-year-old made his comeback from injury during the defeat against Spurs, coming on for the final 25 minutes in place of Alexander Isak.

Newcastle have been without their number nine for a month, with the striker previously not featuring since the 2-0 Champions League defeat to Borussia Dortmund.

But after missing five consecutive games, Wilson was fit enough to return on Sunday. He was also joined by Sean Longstaff, who had missed the Magpies’ previous four games with an ankle injury.

While Newcastle still have a lot of injuries, Eddie Howe’s squad is getting stronger. Getting Wilson back is a huge boost, and the forward has explained why Sunday was such a good day for him despite the result.

After the game, Wilson spoke to NUFC TV about his comeback from a hamstring injury.

“We’ve got a massive game coming up,” he said.

“I’ve worked hard these last four or five weeks to make sure I’m back for these games coming up. We’ve got some big games coming. We need as many players as possible to give the manager options and share the load.

“And, as a striker, to add goals. That’s what I’m here to do. That’s what I enjoy doing. Today I helped Joey get on the scoresheet which was a silver-lining in a negative moment.

“Personally it was a good day in terms of getting back fit and getting through the game.”

An assist and some controversy on his Newcastle comeback

Despite Newcastle losing 4-1, Wilson was still involved in a lot of drama during his second half cameo.

He provided a nice assist for Joelinton, who scored his second goal of the season to give Newcastle a consolation. It was a smart finish from the Brazilian, but it was too little too late.

Wilson was also involved in an incident with Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario. The Italian made a gesture towards Wilson that the Newcastle striker thought was disrespectful.

There was a lot for Wilson to get stuck in to, and he will now turn his attention to the Champions League. He is yet to score in the competition, and Wednesday night against AC Milan would be the perfect time to break his duck.
