Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has refused to make any excuses after the Magpies were battered 4-1 by Tottenham Hotspur.
For the fifth game in a row, Eddie Howe had to pick the same 10 outfield players, and it quickly became apparent that tiredness was once again going to be an issue.
Newcastle were really poor in the first half, but did show signs of life after the break. However, it was all for nothing with Richarlison making it 3-0 to end all hope of a Toon comeback.
Son Heung Min then made it four, before Joelinton got a consolation goal for Eddie Howe’s side. Did we deserve it? Maybe not, but it at least gave the travelling Toon Army something to celebrate after their journey to London proved to be difficult given train issues.
But Newcastle have once again struggled on the road, with Howe’s side still boasting only one league win away from home this season. Their record away from St James’ Park is not good enough and desperately needs to improve.
Alan Shearer not happy with Newcastle’s performance against Tottenham
It was a pretty woeful afternoon for Newcastle United, and Alan Shearer has explained why Spurs were so much better than the Magpies whilst speaking to the Premier League’s official website.
“No complaints, the best team won by a mile,“ he said.
“They were fitter, stronger, quicker. They passed it better than Newcastle, created more chances. I don’t want to use tired as an excuse because I don’t like that, but Newcastle looked really flat from the first minute.”

Newcastle must improve against AC Milan on Wednesday
Everything Shearer says is spot on. Tottenham were better in pretty much every department than Newcastle, particularly in possession.
That was the Magpies’ big issue. We were so wasteful on the ball, giving it away sloppily on so many occasions. Our ball retention did improve after the break, but even when he could keep possession it was slow and ponderous.
As Shearer says, Newcastle were flat against Spurs, and they desperately need to lift themselves ahead of Wednesday night’s game against AC Milan. That is our biggest game of the season so far, with a win required to keep our Champions League dream alive.
Fortunately, we are a different beast at home.
