Callum Wilson admits 27-year-old Tottenham player showed him a ‘lack of respect’

Callum Wilson has criticised Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario for his antics at the end of Newcastle’s 4-1 defeat in North London on Sunday.

Newcastle were comfortably beaten after what was another poor away performance, but the team were again unhappy with their opposition’s behaviour after the game.

In his interview with Sky Sports, Wilson revealed that he had felt disrespected by Vicario who was understood to be pulling faces and messing around.

After a Thursday night defeat to Everton which saw Sunderland-supporting Jordan Pickford celebrating in front of the away fans, Wilson was clearly on high alert for any disrespectful behaviour.

Tottenham were by far and away the superior team on the night and showed their true qualities on the pitch by outclassing Eddie Howe’s side.

Newcastle were poor in their whole performance on the evening, but the striker felt there was no need to poke fun at a team who were already down and out.

If only the team could have showed that kind of fight and desire during the game they may have come away with something other than zero points and shipping four goals along the way.

In his interview after the game, Wilson said: “There’s a way to win isn’t there. I think we saw it in midweek when Pickford was messing around. The goalkeeper’s started pulling faces and messing around and it’s just a lack of respect I thought.

“But I’ve said my peace, we’re grown men, we move on.”

Wilson’s return is one positive on a disappointing night at Tottenham

Seeing Wilson and Sean Longstaff back on the bench was a big boost for Newcastle coming into the game, though it didn’t do much for their confidence on the pitch.

The whole team were tired and exasperated after starting a fifth consecutive game in a matter of two weeks and there is no letting up as they head into a Champions League game against AC Milan on Wednesday.

The hope is that one or two bodies might be available for that game, with Harvey Barnes looking close to a return, and being back at St James’ Park will also be a big boost that may be able to help the Magpies secure a historic result.
