If it was not for PSR, Elliot Anderson would still be a Newcastle United player.
The midfielder was earmarked for a bright future at St James’ Park, with Eddie Howe a huge fan of Elliot Anderson.
Even before he left, there were plans for Anderson to get a new contract. However, the situation changed when Newcastle’s PSR situation became nuclear.
The club needed to increase its revenue, which meant cashing in on a homegrown player. Anderson joined Nottingham Forest for £35million, which went a huge way towards the Magpies complying with PSR.
The move has done wonders for Anderson’s career. He was outstanding during his first year at the City Ground, and he is eager to continue progressing in a Nottingham Forest shirt.

Elliot Anderson was surprised he left Newcastle United
Anderson had no intention of leaving Newcastle United in the summer of 2024. However, the 22-year-old has now admitted that joining Nottingham Forest was a great move for his career.
One year on, Anderson has reflected on his St James’ Park departure during an interview with the Telegraph.
“Yeah, 100%,” he said when asked if it was difficult to understand why he was having to leave Newcastle.
“It definitely was. I didn’t really see it coming, but it’s the new rules in football these days. I got a phone call while I was away on holiday, telling me I was possibly going to leave. A few days later I was flying to Nottingham.
“I’ve come to Forest and it’s really benefitted me as a player, but maybe I didn’t see it like that when I left Newcastle. Everything happens for a reason and it’s been a great move for me. I’m really enjoying my football.”
Newcastle United now on the other side of PSR rules
It was heartbreaking to see Anderson forced to leave Newcastle United. A local lad having to be sold to appease the Premier League’s financial rules.
It was the only way that Newcastle could comply with PSR, no matter how wrong it was.
Fast forward to 2025 and the Magpies’ PSR position is much healthier. They have had greater capacity to spend this summer, while they are now set to take advantage of a rival’s own PSR position.
Newcastle are set to buy Jacob Ramsey, who joined Aston Villa the age of six. Having risen through the ranks at Villa, they are now having to cash in on the midfielder. Ramsey is joining Newcastle for £40million, as he gets set to wave goodbye to the club that raised him.
The deal will aid Villa’s financial situation, at a time when clubs outside the ‘big six’ struggle to splash the cash and challenge the establishment.
