Nick Woltemade says Newcastle United have an ‘amazing player’ after making Champions League history

Nick Woltemade was seriously impressed with Newcastle United star Sandro Tonali following their 4-0 win over Union Saint-Gilloise in the Champions League.

On Wednesday night, Newcastle United thrashed USG 4-0 to lay down a marker in this season’s Champions League.

Though tougher tests will come for Eddie Howe’s side in this competition, it was still a hugely positive display from Newcastle.

Woltemade opened the scoring with a clever flick (it was so slight that it initially looked like a deflection) before Anthony Gordon scored two penalties and Harvey Barnes got in on the act. It was Newcastle’s biggest ever win in the competition and their first victory on the road in the tournament since 2003.

As such, Woltemade was praised by Newcastle fans. Still, he was keen to give one of his teammates in Tonali a huge amount of credit, too.

After the game, Tonali posted a collage of images from the match on social media platform Instagram.

The Italian international was as brilliant as ever in the middle of the park and it was from his shot that Woltemade scored.

Tonali captioned his post: “European nights, special.”

To which Woltemade responded: “Amazing player!!”

The 25-year-old put in another fine showing for his team and would have had that goal on another day.

According to FotMob data, the former AC Milan star created one chance, boasted an 89% passing accuracy and had 90 touches.

Seven of his passes were into the final third, while he also made four ball recoveries and one tackle.

Following the departure of Alexander Isak, Tonali is arguably Newcastle’s star man and he’s certainly playing as such.

Newcastle want to offer a new contract to Tonali and that cannot happen soon enough. While this is a team packed full of talent, he is so often the standout.
