Newcastle United fans on social media were delighted with Nick Woltemade’s full debut for the club in the Champions League.

Woltemade scored as Newcastle United beat Union Saint-Gilloise 4-0 in Brussels to get their Champions League campaign up and running.

While the German international did play against Barcelona earlier this month, it was the first time he played from the start in the competition.

So much has been made about Woltemade’s price tag in recent weeks but the 23-year-old is certainly impressing.

He’s now got three goals in six games for the club, although there was an element of good fortune in his strike against USG.

Still, Newcastle fans were impressed.

Newcastle’s club-record signing played alongside Anthony Gordon and Anthony Elanga for the first time.

Even away from his goal, Woltemade impressed with his ability to hold the ball up and bring others into play.

“Woltemade is absolutely class, no wonder Bayern are crying about missing out on him on a near-daily basis,” wrote another fan.

One supporter added: “Is that Woltemade or Berbatov 2.0?”

Another said: “Woltemade is Woltemessi!”

It was another impressive display from a player still finding his feet at a new club. His goals are a major boost right now and it’s exciting to imagine what the attacking unit will look like once he is fully up to speed.

Tougher tests will come, particularly in this competition. For now, however, Woltemade is proving that the price tag involved in his signing is not having too much of an impact on him.

It increasingly looks as if Newcastle have found their new hero. With Yoane Wissa injured, he really is stepping up.
