Anthony Gordon is already looking towards next season with Newcastle United after England lost the Euro 2024 final.
The 23-year-old had the chance to become immortal, as England went in search of their first major trophy since 1966. However, the Three Lions came up short, losing 2-1 to Spain in Berlin.
Anthony Gordon was an unused substitute in the final, which was pretty much the story of his tournament.
The Newcastle United winger barely featured for England, making just one appearance during the entire competition. That was a five minute cameo against Slovenia in the group stage, despite England crying out for a player like him during the entire Euros.
Yet Gareth Southgate constantly opted against picking Gordon, and now he may never manage his country again. There is a chance that the 53-year-old could leave, with Eddie Howe one of the favourites to replace Southgate.
That would be a massive blow for Newcastle, ahead of what is a hugely important season. The Magpies must do better, while there is hope that Gordon could be motivated to be even better after his England disappointment.

Now Gordon has commented on the new season with Newcastle, having taken to Instagram to address England’s Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain.
Alongside pictures of him wearing his medal and consoling Bukayo Saka, Gordon wrote: “We will be back. Massive thank you to everyone who supported us, it didn’t go unnoticed. Time to recharge for the new season.”
Newcastle United can benefit from Gordon’s England struggles
It was meant to be such an exciting summer for Gordon. He had worked so hard to force his way into the England team, and had looked really impressive during his first few appearances for the Three Lions.
There was even hope that he could start in Germany, but that ended up being so far away from the truth. All Gordon got was one substitute appearance, as Southgate’s side aimlessly bumbled their way into a second consecutive European Championship final. Sadly, the outcome was the same, as England fell at the final hurdle.
Had different decisions been made, it could have been a very different summer. England did well to get to the final, yet it was not a true reflection of Southgate’s group.
For Gordon, he should now be encouraged to go again. He will not make excuses, and will work even harder to become a regular starter for England.
That should benefit Newcastle United, as they prepare to welcome back a winger with a point to prove.
Newcastle’s focus will be on keeping Gordon at St James’ Park
But Newcastle’s first priority will be making sure that he is happy on Tyneside.
It was reported recently that Gordon’s head has been turned by talk of a move to Liverpool, with the Magpies considering cashing in when their PSR situation was at its most desperate.
For now, Newcastle plan to give Gordon a new contract, as they aim to direct his attention away from Anfield.
