French newspaper L’Equipe gave both Newcastle United stars Nick Pope and Bruno Guimaraes higher ratings than Kylian Mbappe after the 1-1 draw against PSG.

After a number of efforts on goal from PSG, Pope was the main reason why Newcastle were still in the game while Bruno Guimaraes had controlled the midfield brilliantly in both halves.

Notorious for their harsh marking, L’Equipe had actually conceded that the two Newcastle players enjoyed better games than Mbappe who had scored the controversial equaliser from the penalty spot but had been kept rather quiet other than that.

Newcastle stars shone against PSG

After some very impressive displays in the Champions League already, it’s no surprise to see Pope on top form once again, but some of the saves he pulled off on the night were quite unbelievable.

One in particular against Bradley Barcola really made it feel like it wasn’t going to be PSG’s night and that Newcastle were going to walk away with a crucial three points, but it just wasn’t to be.

Bruno was also absolutely sensational again in the middle of the park. His ability to stay calm under pressure and find space when he looks to be trapped in a corner was key to Newcastle’s gameplan.

The Brazilian also has a knack of getting the opposition to foul him when in tight spaces which again was key for Newcastle who were defending for their lives by the end of the game.

L’Equipe were clearly very impressed with both Newcastle players with Bruno receiving a seven while Pope earned himself an eight, two higher than PSG’s star man Mbappe with a six.

Lewis Miley robbed after impressive display vs PSG

Although they were very impressed with Pope and Bruno’s displays, L’Equipe somehow gave Lewis Miley a rating of four after the Newcastle midfielder put in a great performance against PSG.

At 17-years-old, Miley did not look out of place whatsoever in the midfield and had played some brilliant balls up to Newcastle’s attackers throughout the game, so it’s difficult to understand this harsh rating.

It’s also important to look at the context – Miley would never have expected to be playing important minutes in the Champions League this season let alone starting and playing a full 90, but he did so with such composure and confidence like he does it every other week.

Eddie Howe won’t want to get ahead of himself and there’s still a long way to go in his development, but Miley truly does look like a brilliant talent who is only going to get better at Newcastle.
