Newcastle United’s chances of keeping Alexander Isak are suddenly changing

Newcastle United must do whatever it takes to keep Alexander Isak amid Arsenal interest.

The 25-year-old continues to go from strength to strength, despite a ridiculous amount of outside noise about him leaving Newcastle United.

No club can afford him, with Newcastle United valuing Isak at £150million.

Despite that, pundits continue to talk about a ‘big six’ club signing the Sweden international. Paul Merson is desperate for Arsenal to sign Isak, and it is easy to understand why. He was wondrous against them on Tuesday night, as Newcastle United beat Arsenal 2-0 in the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg.

A striker like Alexander Isak is the missing piece of the Arsenal jigsaw, but Mikel Arteta will need to find someone else who fits.

Arsenal cannot afford to buy Alexander Isak from Newcastle United

That is because, despite their admiration for him, Arsenal are not going to be signing Alexander Isak in 2025.

According to the Daily Mail, Arsenal are not going to be able to afford to sign Isak from Newcastle United this summer.

They report that the Arsenal owner is unlikely to sanction a move for the forward, who is aware that the Gunners are interested in him.

The Daily Mail add that with Arsenal out of the picture as it stands, the Magpies’ chances of keeping Isak at St James’ Park are ‘increasing by the day’.

Barcelona watching Alexander Isak

While Arsenal are suddenly out of the race to sign Isak, Newcastle’s most expensive signing ever does have other suitors.

That should come as no surprise for a player who boasts 14 goals in his last 15 games.

Geordie Boot Boys have been told by TBR Football insider Graeme Bailey that Barcelona have been watching Isak, as they ponder who to sign as Robert Lewandowski’s long-term replacement.

“It’s not a huge surprise that Barcelona are looking at him,” he said.

“They will be in the market for a number nine very soon, within the next six to 12 months. Robert Lewandowski has not got long left. Erling Haaland has always been their number one choice, but he might not be available until 2026.

“Barcelona are doing their due diligence on alternatives, and Alexander Isak is very much one they have watched and been impressed with. I am told the last few weeks they have seen him numerous times, including in the Carabao Cup against Arsenal.

“We know Isak has a contract until 2028, but they cannot keep him on this current deal. It was Newcastle’s decision to pull out of previous talks.

“If Newcastle have any hope of keeping Isak, they need to qualify for the Champions League. But they cannot stop other clubs watching him, and so they should be watching him. You would expect a club like Barcelona to be looking at him if they are in the market for a striker.”
