Newcastle United’s biggest transfer regret rubs salt in wounds with ‘excellent’ Player of the Match display

Newcastle United have been painfully reminded about their disappointing summer transfer window.

It was a summer window to forget for Newcastle, who failed to land any of their top targets under new sporting director Paul Mitchell.

Newcastle pushed hard to sign a centre-back and a right-sided winger over the summer who would immediately improve Eddie Howe‘s side.

Despite multiple bids for Marc Guehi and a deadline day offer for Anthony Elanga, Newcastle ended the summer emptyhanded.

To make matters worse, Newcastle also sold two of their most exciting young talents to evade Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules.

Yankuba Minteh completed a move to Brighton and academy product Elliot Anderson was sold to Nottingham Forest for £35m.

Elliot Anderson stars in Player of the Match display

Elliot Anderson was making great progress at St James’ Park and looked to be on the verge of a real breakthrough into the first team before he was sold to Forest.

Weeks after completing his move, Anderson admitted it was “tough” to leave Newcastle given it was his boyhood club.

It was already difficult waving goodbye to Anderson, and it doesn’t help that he has been in great form since leaving.

He has immediately become a regular starter for high-flying Forest, who currently sit 10th in the Premier League table.

Anderson has also been impressing on the international stage for the England Under-21s, and he was in action again on Tuesday against Azerbaijan Under-21s.

The Young Lions won 7-0 and Anderson was one of the seven different scorers on the night. He played the full 90 minutes in central midfield and was awarded the Player of the Match award for his “excellent” display.

Elliot Anderson is Newcastle’s biggest transfer regret

Almost every aspect of Newcastle’s summer window was disappointing but the decision to sell Anderson was borderline disastrous.

He was easily one of the club’s best young talents and was finding a spot in Howe’s starting lineup in an advanced midfield position – a position the squad is now severely lacking.

Howe was “really disappointed” to sell Anderson this summer, and the Newcastle boss recently described him as one of two “elite players” produced by Newcastle’s academy.

His £35m sale brought a big profit to the club but it wouldn’t be a surprise if his value continues to skyrocket now he is playing regularly at Forest and with England.

Newcastle may have to dip into the market in the near future to sign a creative midfielder when they had a top-class option come through their academy.
